Perspering feet

QUESTION: "What can I do about perspiring feet?"

F. de Bruijn, Amsterdam

Answer

Perspiring feet are completely normal. After all, they are 'working hard'. On an average level, feet will produce a shotglass of sweat a day, and sometimes even more. Causes such as heat, exercise, medication and heredity affect sweat production, as well as certain shoes and socks. Plastic Footwear - of which there are more and more in the shops and you can't hardly distinguish from leather footwear - are hotbeds; compare it with a plastic bag on your feet. Also shoes with a nylon lining, safety shoes that strongly close and rubber boots can not "breathe",  so the sweat can not evaporate.
In this type of footwear sweat cumulates and is forming, along with skin flakes, an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, especially if it is hot inside the shoes. The bacteria multiply rapidly in such an environment and will cause an perspiration odor on the normally inodorous sweat.

Advice

Based on this information, it is logical that wearing leather shoes with a leather lining is our first recommendation. It's not hard to see because every shoe has a label inside which indicates via symbols if the upper lining and outsole are made of leather or not. Open shoes like sandals and slippers are, of course, most ventilating. Naturally, frequent washing is important to prevent foot odor. Wash your feet every morning and evening with an antibacterial soap. Or add a splash of white vinegar to the foot, because many bacteria can not withstand acidic. Dry your feet thoroughly and wait a few minutes before switching on your socks or stockings, so they are really dry. Most comfortable are cotton or wool socks on which little or no plastic is processed; These are natural, strong, moisture-absorbent materials. Talcum powder (which is also helping to keep dry feet) a special foot deodorant or antibacterial insoles are additional tools to counteract unpleasant body odor.

Tips

  1. Change your shoes daily, so the worn shoes can dry.
  2. Wear clean socks every day, you can sprinkle some talcum powder in them.
  3. If you buy shoes with a removable footbed, it is smart to buy an extra pair of insoles, so you can change the soles every other day.
  4. Don't place your shoes near central heating, because the leather will dry out. If it does, nourish the leather with a high quality shoe-cream.
